DigitalOcean volume-management operations in FRA1 were impaired for nearly five hours

On August 13, DigitalOcean reported degraded Block Storage operations in FRA1. Between 09:50 and 14:30 UTC, volume attach and detach requests could be delayed or fail.

The issue affected Droplets and Managed Kubernetes. After the primary recovery, DigitalOcean continued resolving residual problems with a subset of Kubernetes volume attachments before closing the incident.

The status page did not report data loss, read or write failures on already attached volumes, or a complete FRA1 outage. A root cause analysis was not published with the incident updates.

The practical risk is loss of control at the moment a team needs to attach a volume to a replacement VM, restore a service on another node, or scale a cluster. Critical data still requires independent backups and a tested recovery path that does not depend on a single attach operation in one region.
