An 800-volt DC path is intended to reduce power conversions, but it remains an evolving architecture rather than an established industry standard.
NVIDIA, Google, and Microsoft are developing an 800-volt direct-current power architecture for high-density compute racks. The work is taking place through the Open Compute Project, with specifications published in March and July 2026.
The aim is to bring high-voltage DC power closer to the racks and remove intermediate conversion stages. That matters as AI systems push rack power higher and conventional distribution consumes more space while adding heat and complexity.
NVIDIA says more than 80 infrastructure vendors are working on compatible components. An MGX-compatible 800 VDC power rack for existing data centers is expected in the second half of 2026, while a row-level power center rated up to 2 MW is planned for 2027.
Those dates are roadmap targets, not evidence of broad availability. 800 VDC is not yet an established industry standard, and deployment in a live facility would require dedicated electrical design, personnel-safety measures, and hardware compatibility checks.
